Nutrition
Popcorn is a high nutritional quality food.
This is due to many factors such as:
- Popcorn is ultimately a whole grain, being a relevant source of carbohydrates that provides energy to the body and also contains an important percentage of fibers, considered elementary for any diet.
- Popcorn is low in calories, when compared to other snacks with more industrialization.
- It is normally consumed without the addition of food additives (preservers – colorants – flavoring) which makes it a natural, healthy and nutritious food, especially when compared to snacks of a similar segment of consumption (potato chips – peanuts – etc.)
- When it is popped with vegetable oil, its level of sugar, cholesterol, sodium, saturated and unsaturated fats is reduced, fulfilling the requirements of a healthy diet and avoiding risk factors that are important for the current diet.
- The nutritional composition of Popcorn is balanced and varied, being an important source of minerals (especially Iron and Calcium) and antioxidants (polyphenols) even more than some fruits and vegetables.
